Following Him

Following Him

As christians, we are followers of Jesus Christ; expected to do His will and obey His commandments. There is always something very important in everything we humans do; it might not be known to others; either friends, associates, colleagues, family members, even up to our spouses, but it still remains true; we usually have a motive behind all our actions, you could say the ‘Reason’ behind the things we do. In our followership of Jesus as christians, this still applies. John 6: 1 – 13 tells us a story of a great multitude following Jesus. Oftentimes, this was usually the case and most of them were after miracles; signs and wonders. Some were even after bread(i.e food and material things). They knew He could feed them all.

But we had a few who were following Him not for these things (the 12 disciples), but for His teachings, for the Word, which He usually fed them with. We might want to say that what’s wrong with following Him for material things afterall? Now this is it: His Word says that “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). His Word also says that He supplies bread to the eater and seed to the sower (2nd Corinthians 9:10). How many of us would refuse to eat today because we ate yesterday? probably none, because you need another bread for today.

For those following Him for the Word, those are the sowers whom He gives seed to for sowing. And remember that a seed contains a tree, which contains many fruits; having seeds in them, which are also trees, with fruits, with seeds, with trees, with fruits, and continuously. God even ensured that He gave us this revelation in His Word (Genesis 1:12).

So a seed is actually a plantation or an orchard. When you have a plantation, it goes beyond a source of bread for you and your household, it becomes a source of blessing to your society, to your generation, it puts food on your table, clothes on your body, shelter over you; it takes you a higher realm where you begin to lend to nations (Deut. 15:6). That is what the Word of God does.

This helps us to understand the concept of followership; because if you are not becoming like the one you are following, then there is an issue somewhere. And as we can see, after Jesus left, His followers became giants, icons, legends who we respect and value up till this day; Paul, Simon Peter, James, etc who all did very mighty works.

The importance of thirsting for Jesus, the Word of God cannot be over-emphasized. When you have the Word, then you are in charge. Let’s look at the life of David; often times we tend to think God just loved him sentimentally, but His Word says that David was a man after God’s heart (1 Kings 11:4, 1 Kings 14:8, 1 Kings 15:3, 1 Samuel 13:14, Acts 13:22). He wasnt after God’s hands, where bread and signs and wonders come from, rather he was after God’s heart to know His will, His intent, His purpose, to understand the mind of His maker better and have a more cordial relationship with Him.

From this moment, if it hasn’t been the case, you need to start following Jesus for the right motive; so you could know His Word which reveals His mind to you. He reveals His purpose for your life to you and the very best you can ever be is to become what He wants you to be. Seeking for bread is not the ultimate. His Word says seek ye first of kingdom of God and its righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you, (Matthew 6: 30-33).

Make a decision today to thirst for the Word of God, the Bread of Life, let His Spirit dwell in you, then you would have GOD Almighty on the inside and your true self manifests, turning you into an embodiment of His awesome glory.
